When teeth are substantially weakened due to severe wear, breaks and cracks, or containing large cavities or fillings, there comes a point when stronger restorations are necessary to maximise their remaining longevity and to preserve your comfort and function.

Restoring teeth with full coverage crowns is the durable answer to reconstruct and protect the remains of the tooth.

Crowns may be necessary for not only singular teeth, but several at risk teeth and your dentist will closely assess and give advice where necessary if the option is beneficial, which material will serve best, or if other options are available.

What are crowns?

A crown is a dental restoration that is a thin covering that encases the visible part of the tooth and closely replicates natural tooth in appearance and physical characteristics. It is a shell made of ceramic or metal or a combination of both. Not only does the restored tooth look much better, but importantly prevents unexpected breaks which could be too severe to repair. This includes teeth that have had their root canals treated as they are prone to splitting apart and therefore need strong protection to last. Crowns can also be used to treat certain cases of cracked teeth.

The surface of the tooth is trimmed to make room for the chosen crown material. This typically requires two visits, the first for impressions and fitting of the temporary crown, the subsequent visit to permanently cement the crown.

This is a resilient treatment choice, on average lasting at least 6-15 years, depending on the condition of the existing tooth, satisfactory home cleansing and periodic maintenance care.

Oral rehabilitation

We are also equipped and experienced to help with restoring function and aesthetics where there are multiple and more complex problems at play, such as, but not limited to: broken down, cracked, fragile, discoloured, misshapen, misaligned, chipped, missing teeth. These cases often require a multi-treatment approach, including both restorative and prevention strategies.

When damage is advanced and more extensive, and a lot of tooth structure has been lost, the bite will collapse or overclose. That effectively closes the space for teeth to fit. In these cases, treatment is more involved, requiring more stages, as typically the back teeth will need to be lengthened first by building closer to the heights prior to the structure loss, to correct the overclosure of the jaws. And so, as the jaw relationship is reset, the smile design process for the front teeth can begin (this is the same process for Smile Redesign with Porcelain Veneers), then the reconstruction of the front teeth is completed.

As with all treatments we provide, we take great care in examining the condition and using appropriate investigations and planning procedures, before coming up with a suitable treatment plan with your choice of treatment options. Quite often, in observing the principle to save tooth structure where possible, crowns will not be prescribed for all teeth. Sometimes, onlays or partial crowns will be adequate as they require less cutting of tooth and suitable when a lot of healthy tooth remains.
